"Surrender is written in delightful, incisive prose bursting with humanity. It is deeply observed and emotionally powerful, sharp on both the cultural mores of young men and on the deeper consequences of what happens when that mixes with American military power. And each story boasts richly imagined characters that live on in the mind long after you’ve finished reading"—Phil Klay, author of Redeployment, winner of the National Book Award

ABOUT

Brian O’Hare is an award-winning writer/producer and former U.S. Marine Corps officer who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Appropriately, maybe, Brian’s career began in a Baltimore bar, the legendary Club Charles, where director John Waters cast him to appear in his film Cry Baby

Brian teamed with director/producer Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Blacklist) to produce The Devil’s Dosh, a period British gangster film starring George MacKay (1917) that won numerous awards. He's also produced music videos and Cannes Lion winning commercials. As well, Brian is former Editor-at-Large and contributing writer for MovieMaker magazine.

His fiction has appeared in “War, Literature & the Arts”, “Liars’ League - London”, “fresh.ink”, “Santa Fe Writers Project”, “Collateral” , “We Are The Mighty”, “Hobart”, “Bookends Review”, “The Dead Mule School of Southern Literature” and has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes. As well, in September 2021, Brian was selected as a Writing Fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. Most recently, National Book Award winner Phil Klay awarded Brian the Syracuse University Press' 2021 Veterans Writing Award for Surrender—his book of short stories to be published by Syracuse University Press in Fall 2022. He’s currently at work on his debut novel.

Brian served as visiting artist at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island and has lectured on independent producing at Ithaca College and Quinnipiac University. He will speak at CUNY’s Kingsborough Community College in May of 2022.
